House Numbering/Street Naming Regulation Bye-Law — No. 11 of 2016

Part XII — Bwari Area Council FCT Abuja, Nigeria

Pursuant to the provisions of Section 7 and the Fourth Schedule to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, and other relevant Sections of the Local Government Act, Laws of the FCT Abuja 2006 and all other Laws enabling it in that behalf, the Bwari Area Council hereby makes the following Bye-Law.

Street Naming & Signpost Regulations

Sections 1–3 — Application, Consent and Requirements

Approval Requirement

As from commencement of this Bye-Law, no person shall mount a sign post to identify a street, lane, crescent, etc. as his/her own without seeking the approval and consent of the Bwari Area Council. The Council shall take into consideration the applicant's contribution to the society/community as part of its assessment.

Application to Name a Street

Any person who desires to have a street, crescent, road lane, avenue etc. named after himself/herself shall apply formally to the Bwari Area Council and pay a sum as may be prescribed by the Council from time to time.

Application Procedure

Submit Formal Written Application

Application must be typed, signed and dated by the applicant.

Provide Personal Particulars

Including full Name, Address, Occupation, Status in life, Level of achievement/contributions to the community/society, and any other information required by the Council.

Pay Prescribed Fee

Pay such sum as may be prescribed by the Council from time to time upon submission.

Await Council Decision

The Council shall assess the applicant's contribution to the community/society before granting approval.

Penalties & Jurisdiction

Section 4 — Offences and Magistrate Court

Contravention: Any person who contravenes or violates the provisions of this Bye-Law shall be guilty of an offence and shall be liable upon conviction to a minimum fine of ₦10,000 or imprisonment for a term of three (3) months or to both fine and imprisonment.

The Magistrate Court of any grade shall have jurisdiction to try offences under this Bye-Law.

Citation & Commencement

Operational Date — 5th January, 2016

This Bye-Law shall be referred to as House Numbering/Street Naming Regulation Bye-Law (No. 11) 2016 and shall become operational with effect from the 5th day of January, 2016.
